While I was at the doctor's office today for my check up I was visiting with the nurse. I like her so much! Anyhow, we were talking about Ashley going off to college and about how Tom teases me that I'm going to have to get a job now. I told her I'd much rather stay at home and work on my knitting, quilting, crochet, reading and blogging! She said that her daughter, who is 12, really wants to learn how to sew but she isn't crafty at all. She said she had the perfect solution. I could teach her daughter to sew and she could pay me. She's supposed to be talking to her daughter and calling me this weekend to make arrangements.
Now, my first thought was that I'd do it for free since I was so thrilled to hear about a child wanting to learn to sew. But then I thought that might offend her mom....I really feel like she wants to pay me as well as buy the necessary supplies. I think she likes the idea of me teaching her instead of taking her to a store like Hobby Lobby or Jo Ann's.
So, what would you charge? I really have no idea! OH, and any ideas on something simple to start with. I was thinking maybe a pillow? Or a pillow case? Then later we could move up to a rag quilt if she wanted. What to do you think? Thanks for the help!!

Sewing a small pillow will be the best. or just have her sew blocks of colors together. Mom taught me at age 5 by showing me how to sew blocks together and turn that into a pillow.
At 12, she may have definite ideas of what she would like to make (either for herself or as gifts). And that may give you some clues as to projects. A small table runner as a Christmas gift might be fun.
